What does a perinatal behavioral &

mental health coach do?

A perinatal behavioral and mental health coach provides support and guidance to individuals and families during the perinatal period (pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period in addition to fertility challenges and loss) as well as during the early stages of parenting.

Emotional Support                           

The coach offers a safe, non-judgmental space for parents to express their feelings, concerns, and experiences. They provide empathetic listening and validation, helping parents navigate the emotional challenges of pregnancy and parenthood.

Coping Strategies                               

A mental health coach teaches practical coping strategies and self-care techniques to help parents manage stress, anxiety, and overwhelming emotions. This may include mindfulness practices, breathing exercises, and relaxation techniques

Navigating Transitions                           

The coach assists parents in navigating the transitions associated with pregnancy, childbirth, and early parenting. They provide support in managing changes in relationships, work-life balance, and identity shifts.

Education and Awareness           

They educate parents about common mental health issues related to the perinatal period, such as postpartum depression, anxiety, and adjustment disorders. This knowledge helps parents recognize symptoms and seek appropriate help if needed.

Goal Setting                                        

They work collaboratively with parents to set realistic and achievable goals related to their mental health and parenting journey. This could involve improving self-care routines, developing healthy coping mechanisms, or enhancing communication with partners.

Referral and Resource Connection         

If more specialized help is needed, the coach can provide referrals to mental health professionals, support groups, or community resources. They help parents access additional support networks to enhance their well-being.

Breathe to Empower Coaching creates an inclusive, safe, and open-hearted space for you to explore your thoughts, feelings, and challenges. Each session is designed to validate your experiences and offer a grounding presence as we work together. You are welcome to show up exactly as you are, and our time will be dedicated to bringing clarity to anything that feels unclear, ensuring you feel heard and seen.

We begin each session with a brief grounding exercise to help us connect and settle in. From there, weโ€™ll explore your goals, struggles, or questions, moving in whatever direction feels most supportive and relevant that day. Whether you're seeking guidance, reassurance, or practical solutions, our coaching will evolve with your needs. Before we wrap up, Iโ€™ll help you identify clear, actionable goals to work toward between sessions, ensuring you leave with a sense of direction and purpose. Together, weโ€™ll create a path forward that feels aligned with your values and aspirations.

How does Coaching Compare to Therapy?

Coaching and therapy serve distinct but complementary roles. Coaching is forward-thinking, future-oriented, and focuses on setting goals, addressing current challenges, and helping clients stay on track. It is not diagnostic. Therapy, on the other hand, often explores past issues, works through trauma, and can involve diagnoses. Both approaches can work well togetherโ€”therapy helps clients understand and heal from their past, while coaching provides tools for moving forward and integrating that healing into present life. 

I always recommend combining both, if possible! Through side by side coaching and therapy, individuals can gain deeper self-awareness and actionable steps toward achieving their goals and well-being.

The Prenatal to Postnatal Continuum

This 10-session package offers comprehensive support through 5 prenatal and 5 postpartum perinatal mental health coaching sessions. Together, weโ€™ll work collaboratively to identify your goals and develop strategies that resonate with your unique needs during this transformative time.

Throughout our sessions, Iโ€™ll emphasize self-care, emotional well-being, and practical coping techniques to help you navigate the ups and downs of parenthood. Youโ€™ll have a safe, non-judgmental space to express your concerns, explore your feelings, and celebrate your triumphs as you transition into your new role.

Whether youโ€™re preparing for birth, managing the challenges of early parenthood, or seeking emotional grounding, this package is designed to support your journey every step of the way.

Riven-Aster Support

The Riven-Aster Support is a dedicated weekly offering for families experiencing loss who need emotional and mental health support but are unable to afford regular coaching fees. Through this initiative, I provide one free or low-cost/sliding scale coaching session each week to ensure that those navigating grief and hardship can still access the care they need.

This program is rooted in compassion and understanding, offering a safe, supportive space for families to share their experiences, process their emotions, and receive guidance as they move through difficult times. The Riven-Aster Support Fund ensures that financial limitations are never a barrier to receiving meaningful, empathetic care during loss.
